I recently went to Great Barrier Island, fantastic, it's off the beaten track, even for Kiwis, but if you're after a remote paradise wilderness with forest walks, deserted white sand beaches, brilliant diving and laid back locals, this is it. The four and a half hour ferry ride through Auckland's Hauraki Gulf ensures that you forget that this is still officially part of New Zealand's largest city, and rightly so, it's a different world out there.
