Travel Photo of the Week: Women of Elephanta Island

During a wet, steamy October visit to Elephanta Island and after disembarking from the boat trip from ‘ Gateway of India’ Mumbai, we were welcomed by a group of local women. They modeled for the visitors charging 2 rupees for a photo and more if they could get it! This photo was taken before a further 10-20 ladies came rushing over trying to get in the photo shoot to claim their 2 rupees.

Where is Devi Garh?

Devi Garh, Rajasthan

Devi Garh is nestled in the Aravali Hills in the State of Rajasthan, India. The 18th century palace is located in the village of Delwara and forms one of the three main passes into the valley of Udaipur. Devi Garh, has undergone extensive restoration and rebuilding in preparation for its guests since it was purchased back in 1987 when it had been left empty for more than 20 years. The fort palace was built as a place where the past meets the future.

The grounds have been immaculately landscaped and offer fabulous views over the surrounding hills and a lovely pool to relax by. It really is a splendid travel destination in the Rahasthan landscape in which to base yourself to explore the region which has so much to offer.

    Where is Kumarakom?

    Lake Guest Houses

    Lakeside Guest Houses

The beautiful area of Kumarakom is made up of islands, lakes, rivers and canals. It’s often referred to as ‘paradise’ with its mangroves and coconut trees and is found in the State of Kerala.

With a well balanced tropical climate it offers perfect conditions for a vast population of flora and fauna. The area has always attracted many migratory birds such as the heron, Siberian stork, teak and egret. The establishment of the 14 acre ‘Bird Sanctuary’ allows this to continue in a protected environment and is now a popular tourist spot.

A great way to really experience what the area has to offer is to hire a motor boat or better still, if the budget allows, a houseboat and stay out on the lakes for a couple of nights.

    Where is Goa?

    Church in Old Goa

    Church in Old Goa

Goa is a small state located on the west coast of India, in fact it is the smallest state in terms of area. Panaji is the capital. Goa was a Portuguese colony from the time the Portuguese arrived in the 16th century until 1961, when the liberation of Goa took place.

Goa has been attracting national and international visitors for a long time. It is easily accessible and is often referred to as “India lite”, an easy-to-encounter version of India, than many of the larger Indian states and cities.

Goa offers lovely, relaxing beaches, historic architecture, sixteenth century churches, convents, monuments, temples and simply an array of exotic (but peaceful) sounds, smells and experiences.
